  Talk: system summary
This page provides details on assignment 1-1. It is assigned in week 1 and due in week 2. It is worth 50 points.

What you'll do: summarize a distributed system, middleware service, or set of standards

What you'll get: 50 points, and a little bit of public speaking experience

Specifics:

  1. Get the name of a system in class on Week 1
  2. Prepare a brief talk to give in class
    • Maximum length: 3 minutes
    • Visuals are optional
    • If you want to use a visual, email a Powerpoint, PDF, URL, or image file to the instructor before class
    • You can also bring your visuals to class on a CD
    • Most USB flash drives also seem to work
    • You can download from your web site
    • If you want to use a floppy disk, you must also bring a USB drive for it. The classroom PC does NOT have a floppy drive.
  3. What to cover in your summary:
    • System or project name
    • Is it a system, middleware, standards or some combination?
    • Problem(s) they are studying or trying to solve
      • Remember to include transparency and/or scalability goals, if you can find any
    • Brief summary of their approach
  4. When to give your talk:
    • In class in week 2, if possible
    • If you are unable to attend week 2, you may give your talk the next time you attend class.
    • Please notify the instructor in advance if you want to give a talk but you can't do it in week 2.
